The long term problem I am looking at is that the OEM bearings for the Torque Tube can no longer be found anywhere! The current replacement bearing use the C3 rather then the C4 bearing to do the rebuilds. Time will determine if the C3 can replace the C4.

Dave has a housing that can except a bearing that is in production and has the correct C4 rating for clearance. That in itself makes it a very interesting development for a long term replacement part for the 944/951 family. Torque Tube rebuilds are running from $500- $1000. If the replacement TT is in this price range, it would generate interest from people how what to maintain their car into the future.

The tube will be installed it a 350+hp 951 shortly. This guy has agreed to give it a workout. It will still be in the car at the 944Fest and I may well be going up too.

Other projects that are perking- a short shift kit that is both shift level and modified parts on the tranny. It will be made to accept about any threaded **** you could care to have. It will come stock with a stainless steel one. The other version will be cast from the control handle from an F-16, with the buttons operating stereo, nitrous, or whatever. We're also looking at making some camber plates as well. I've some ideas on how to improve on what's out there and need to experiment a bit.

Now Dave, the shift kit sounds like something I would buy. <img border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" title="" src="graemlins/bigok.gif" /> Keep up the good work.

I hope some homework was done on torsional and bending stability of this unit.

It is me who will be giving this torque tube a test run, in my car I don't think the 23 lbs it looses will be something I can notice right away, but it can't hurt.

I'm really doing it just to see how it runs and to make sure that the product lives up to expectations. Knowing dave I feel that this will work out just fine, and considering the pricing he is going to put on these things those of you looking for a rebuilt torque tube could finaly have an alternative....

I'm going to bring jackstands to 944 Fest and put her up in the air to give anyone that wants a look at the pieces of the torque tube that are visible under the car....

Lastly I have had a look at it and the welds are very close to mountian bike quality, the benchmark of welds in my mind.....

Looks like Dave M has produced a very quality piece and we will see shortly how it stacks up in the car....

It's good to hear about people making more replacement parts for our cars. May your market grow, but not from my car!

From a purely metalurgical standpoint, aluminum cannot withstand as many stress cycles as steel, unless it is tempered. With tempering, it can withstand many more cycles, but still not quite as many as an equivalent size steel part. The wall thickness on the original is about 3/32, my tube has a wall thickness of 1/4", finger math says that's the same as 8/32, over double, approaching triple the difference. I'm even thinking at this point that I could have gotten away with a thinner wall, but I don't want to risk it. If anything, by going 166% over, in terms of wall thickness, any torsional issues are likely rendered moot.

We're going to install it in Ian's car on the 28th, assuming his car is running at the time and he's going to flog it for a while.

Keith has the pictures on disc and has agreed to post them for me so every one can see it.
