Default 951 Trans. Question

Hello again Gents.

Do any of you know the diameter of the 951 ring gear?

While I'm here asking, how about the diameter of the 968 6 speed ring gear?

Simple question, if someone has redone any transaxles.

Thanks!

Found the 944 stuff...

944NA :: 7.1875"
951 :: 7.4875"

Haven't found the 968 stuff, but it should be the same as the 911 G50 trans...

How come it seems like we're working on the same project??

8.5" (216mm) for the 968 ring diameter.

That seems big...

Can I ask where you got this information?

Also, it seems that because ZF made both of the 968 boxes, they were both in a wide variety of vehicles...including some American cars. Specific specs are still hard to find, however if you need replacement or different parts of the same size, they are pretty easy to find. Even ring and pinions with slightly different ratios.

No transmission shop in the country has parts or overhaul kits for a 968 tiptronic transmission....but they ALL have parts and kits for a ZF4HP18FLE....

That's interesting about the RPs in different ratios. If they were used for multi purposes may one assume that if you chose an RP from a non Porsche application that the price might be somehow different?

Everyone seems to keep the prices off the webpages, but as we've seen with just about every other part, mention the word Porsche, and the price goes up 50%.

The ratios aren't drastic, but if you need a couple hundred rpm at the track, I would start looking at Citroen and Alfa forums and dealers for parts. They seem to use the lower gears (In the 4 speed automatics.. I didn't look to much into the 6speed trans, but if they used one, they probably used the other.)

Renaud rebuilt a 968 tranny that he installed on his 951.

I loved that this was his first post too.

That's interesting. I had no idea that these trans made it into those sorts of cars. So you reckon for sure that you could find an RP from one of these cars that would slot straight into a 968 tranny? Hmm...
I'm starting a build up of one of these for racing and am looking at different gearing choices for a high torque motor. As you say, any mere sniff of Porsche and the $$ go up, just because they can! Be nice to find some 'backdoor' alternatives so to speak.
I'd be interested in people's opinions of what gearing to use for this application. Shorter gearing for rapid acceleration or longer for building torque?

If you do get the gearing sources, please post them. There are a lot of people interested in this. I would think the Z06 gearing would be pretty close for a high torque motor comparison. The regular C6 Corvette and the 951 gearing is about the same up to 5th gear.

The tranny he rebuilt was the tiptronic automatic? Are there any other details you (or he) can provide for me? Stock engine (stock HP)? How did he work out the electronics? Boost line pressure?

968 6speed gear sets are easy to find. However, because they are for a 968, they cost more than a complete transaxle.

If you search for the ZF part numbers, it makes life a LOT easier. Last night, I found more information about the tiptronic transaxle used in the 968 on a Citroen website than I've ever found on any Porsche website.

ZF made transaxles for MANY manufacturers (Even the c4 corvette). Just from a cost standpoint, it wouldn't make sense that each and every manufacturer had a different gearset. I would imagine the 968 stuff (Which is actually G44, not G50) was used in several other cars.

Perhaps by torque I should qualify that by saying torque / boost. So with a larger capacity and boosted motor, what would be the better way to go?
Realising of course that gearing can be very track dependent. I might start another thread so as not to take away from this one.
