baby steps 5.5: "suspension" of disbelief and a total "waste" of a gate
alrighty, i got the front a-arms cleaned up and put the new bushings in!
the final tasks for the front end are:
* finish cleaning up the calipers, spindles and hubs
* replace front wheel bearings
* replace front rotors
* grease up bushings
* figure out a custom mount for brake ducting
* put in my new steering rack from autozone (woot!)
i also pulled off the waste (of a) gate. wow. talk about horrible repair history.
1) two of the three allen bolts holding the head of the wastegate on are missing. it's also shimmed w/regular hardware store washers, which while not the most *precise* spacing, kinda works... i guess.
2) one of the four bolts holding the return pipe had it's head already sheared off. upon trying to get the other three off, i sheared off two more and stripped the head of the third.
3) the bracket holding the WG to the frame was curiously absent... sigh.
4) the vacuum line on the WG was (of course) cracking and barely hanging on. good thing i'm replacing that crap...
all is not lost, not by a mile! i have a second WG and bracket that i can (thankfully) just finish cleaning up and swap in. then i'll turn that crap wastegate in to an ashtray. or, if it's not cracking, maybe clean up and sell.
once i get the front end "done-ish", the car will be pushed in to the garage and put up on blocks for the oil pan removal and rear suspension work. whee!

Incomplete, good luck looks like you are doing a great job. BTW, Just an FYI, many of the shims that you buy (the ones I have) look like hardware store washers they may be legit shims.

got calipers? i'll measure my 'shims' when i get home this evening and post their thickness. curious if they're actually just washers or 'legit'.
