Going to replace a clicking CV this weekend and bought a complete rebuilt CV axle from Napa. The CV on the new axle is lightly greased but the box contains two fairly hefty bags of blue axle grease.

I've read the instructions but am unclear as to how much grease I should pack into the CV's and boots? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

 

I diassemble the joint and give everything a coating of grease, reassemble then pack it some more, sort of like a wheel bearing. I then put a smear of grease over the inside of the boot so the rubber doesn't get so hard from drying out.

While your going through the trouble of doing this absolute mess of a job, i would pack the joint with Redline CV2 moly grease. Hope you also bought a new box of nitrile gloves also .

 

Use 1 bad per joint.

 

Echoing all that Techno Duck said. I"ve repacked one of mine with Valvoline moly grease soon after I got the car (torn boot), and I'll be inspecting, repacking all 4 with Redline CV2 in a week or two. As a general rule, you can't use too much grease (unless it's packed to the brim and slinging it everywhere... then you've probably used a tad too much).

 

Buy yourself a needle attachment for a grease gun. Install them on the shaft and leave the small band off. Slip the needle under and pump in "I chose redline" but which ever grease you like. When it starts puking out your probably good. Mine took quite a bit. One tube for all four with the gun.

Then slap on the small band and away you go

I also gave mine a quick coat as I assembled.

Be sure the axles you buy have turbo CV joints not NA 944 of they will not last.

The body shop replaced the axles when the car got hit but it looks like they failed to grease the CV joints. The car has less than 100 miles on it and both inner CV's have failed.

It's funny, the body shop and the local Porsche independent are the first two 'outsiders' to work on my car in the 7 years I've owned it. Both shops are excellent and very competent and yet I find myself with a half dozen items on my squawk list that I need to sort out after getting the car back. I'm sure I could go back to either of them and they'd attempt to make it right but it's just less brain damage to do it myself, on my schedule and know that it's done right.

I checked into NAPA axles as well and for '86 there only seems to be one part number for 951 or 944.

Anyone have experience with these rebuilt axle assemblies? Rebuilt by Cardone I think. They seem to be the best price out there.

 

They don't hold up on turbos on the track... That's all I know.
