Default knocking sound

On my way to work the knocking sound started. It continued when I drove to and from lunch as well. With the car in gear and acclerating/deccelerating I had the sound. In neutral or clutch pedal in, no sound and engine revved fine. On my way home (20 mile drive) no sound.

I'm thinking it's not the engine. Perhaps a torque tube bearing as those are original with near 200,000 miles? The CV joints/axles were replaced a few years back. The wheel bearings have not been changed to my knowledge.

If it was torque tube bearings, it would likely make a noise in neutral (clutch pedal out). It would only go away with the clutch pedal in (torque tube disconnected from engine).

I agree that it doesn't sound like the engine. Could be a wheel bearing, seized brake caliper, flat spotted tire,...

I forgot the torque tube is still attached in neutral due to the transmission being in the back hah.

I was suprised that this loud noise all of a sudden went away when I drove home. Should be interesting to see what happens today.

Wheel bearings or seized brake caliper. Would a brake caliper seize and then release?

if your brake disc is warped and your brake pad is a little loose it'll make a clunk noise

Bummer, I had changed those awhile back. Messy job. If that's what it turns out to be I guess I'll spring for those locking fastener sets finally.

No sound at all since the two on the morning of 12th. Perhaps some ice got stuck somewhere? I'll keep an eye/ear on it.
