Default Lets talk Cylinder head work/vendors

I am in the market for a head. I would like oversize valves, port and polish, the works. Who should I go with and why? I am having a hard time deciding. Looking at Lindsey Racings site, you get alot for the price. I hear good things about Vitesse's head, but have no specs. Milledge.....$4500 pricey. What am I doing with the car? Its a weekend/summer car that I track a few times a year.

I'm not going to get too involved here but I'll say that you'll want to get a cam/head combo to get the most out of either one.

Pacific Performance Motorsports / Mike Stimson in San Mateo, CA. http://pacificperformancemotorsports.com/index.html

The total cost is based on your goals and how the cylinder head fits into your engine "package". You may want anywhere from correcting the port/proper valve job to welding the ports and relocating the valves. Mike Stimson collaborated with Milledge back when Jon was in California the first time.

Good Luck! John

John Millage all the way....

I think the $4500 is with cam and valvetrain using new billet cams(rather than welded up regrinds), TI valve springs and retainers (the good stuff... not the cheap TI crap out there) .

This was also using bone stock lifters.

With his head and cam with stock valves, on a 2.5L, I was able to easily make 400RWHP at 17psi boost and 415RWHP at 18psi boost on pump gas. Yes I had other bolt-ons as well like turbo, modified stock intake manifold, maf, SFR header & 3" exhaust.

You get what you pay for....

I'm not aware of anybody here that has achieved this type of power on a 2.5L at such "low" boost levels, nor with the area under the curve that my engine made. Every other 400+RWHP 2.5L 8V engine I've ever seen has taken a lot more boost to do it with a much smaller area under the curve.

It's a testimonial to what happens when you have a great cylinder head with all properly matched/sized components.

Tony- how was your intake modified? I was considering making my own intake, a la Corleone and am getting ideas.

"Go With MiKe Stimson,

>Agree about Mike Stimson - this guy knows his stuff and he can make almost anything in his shop. Although there are some great resources here (LR, Vitesse, Chris White, SFR, Pauetuning, etc.,) I went with him because he's local, and I wanted to be involved in the process.

Mike will talk your ear off about engines, so know more or less what you want going in, because he'll give you a bunch of options. What I like about Mike is that he's very analytical yet practical, and he encourages decisions that are data - driven. If you are going with a big valve head, expect to cough up for a NA head, custom milled valves and flow - testing the end result. A custom ground cam from Redline Racing Cam in San Jose runs about $650, based on a recent quote. Mike Stimson works with Spiro at Redline to provide flow data in order to maximize the engine's potential.

You don't need to go to that extreme.

You need to cut the manifold apart in 3 pieces so it can be ported properly.

That and a larger throttle body is all that's needed.

Here's a pic of my intake..notice the cuts on each runner and the plenum:

Here's a pic of the Millage cylinder head with the SFR header:

Tony, still got that setup, and is it for sale.....lol Milledge I know I should go with, but I figure if I am spending that kind of money on a head.... it better be a 3L.

Thanks Tony. Yeah this seems to be a bit easier to do than to fab up my own from scratch. Could I pm you to pick your brain on this?
