Default Exhaust stud nightmare.

I was tracking down a tic noise and it turned out to be that one of the runners was loose. I get my wrench out and when i turned on the nut, the nut and stud both turned, without any torque being applied.
Has anyone repaired this without removing the head? i searched the forum but most pics have the engine out of the car. Any suggestions would help.
Forgot to mention, it's the one nearest to the radiator.

Is the stud threading into the head or is it turning in place (ie. stripped)? If it's just threading into to head put some PB Blaster on it to try and break the nut free and continue turning it until the stud stops in the head and the nut torques down. Or you can pull the stud out and replace it with a new stud/nut which will have better chances of tightening down (you'll most likely have to use the "two-nut" method to get the stud in).

it just keeps turning and never gets tight. if you try to back it off it does the same. i was going to try to pull it out but then i thought i'd get some ideas first.

sounds like its stripped. you can try tapping it and if that doesn't work then your going to have helicoil it. you might be able to do it in the car. you only have to pull the head if you cant get to it. that would be the time to do belts, ect....

Sounds like you'll have to get a little creative to back it out. Since it wont come out by turning it, you'll need some leverage to assist its journey. I'd wedge a large flat blade screwdriver in while turning the nut. Once its out, helicoil to the rescue.

I had my old head repaired in place. The same thing happened to me, only the stud fell completely out. Don't know exaclty how he did it, but Tim at Speed Force Racing repaired it when he installed my stage 2 headers.

I bet you can drill and retap for a larger size if you have a drill with a 90 degree head on it. Because of the slant of the engine, there's very little clearance to drill at a straight line... That's why it's easier to do with the head off. But, where there's a will, there's a way - especially if the right tools are used.
