Nevertheless this car is a classic. Derek Bell himself owns, drives, and loves his one so they must be pretty damn good.

Yeah, I was going to mention that Derek Bell has kept one of these as a driver – and he has driven just about every other possible street and race Porsche and he still says that this is one of his favorites. You don’t get much better praise that that.

Chris, what Duke is alluding to is the scribble on my helmet in the Avatar. It says
"Dear Pat thanks for the tips. Derek Bell". I was fortunate enough to meet him briefly at a recent car show down here. By that I mean I knew he'd be there and purposely took my helmet and stalked him! I asked him if he still drives the GTS and his eyes lit up a bit and he said yes that it's one of his all time favourite cars. It was actually just being sent back to the factory to have a full going over. That would be a nice little by product of racing for them successfully for so many years that the factory does your car servicing.

When people (including my wife) ask why I spend so much time on playing with cars I point to the poster….

I had dinner with Brian Redmond a couple of years ago – I brought one of the posters from the 50/50 celebration that he organized at Watkins Glen (back in 1999). I had him sign it “Sorry, its all my fault”.

Actually Redmond seems like a good dinner companion for the few interviews I've seen/read.

Brian was one of only three people ever paid to race a 917/30!

Yes, Follmer was the one I couldn't think of.
I've just finished John Follmer's book "Racing in the Rain" which gives great insight to that era although not much of the 917/30 specifically. Interesting to hear his take when working 'with/for' Porsche. Not a happy union.
Sorry about getting so off topic here although I don't think this thread was going to go much further. How about this? Out of the U.K.
"£7000.
Based on an 88 924s the car has had a full 968 running gear transplant.
The car was subject to a full face lift to the 924CGT body kit and a paint refresh a couple of years ago.
It's been a track car for us for a number of years and we've done a lot of work on the car, all of it at EMC in bham. But is also ready to race if that's your thing....
Spec on the car:
Gaz Coilovers ( not the remote reservoir kit - so its fully road compliant )
SD full bolt in cage
Cobra Seats with wrap around ears
Schroth 6 point harnesses
Plumbed in fire extinguisher
Master cut of switches
Rebuilt 968 Calipers
MOT till JUne 2011
Will be SORN'd at end of Nov.
It's difficult to put into words the driving experience you get in the car.... ALL of the power of a 968 but with less weight than a very stripped out CS...
The acceleration in every gear can only be described as ballistic and the car turns almost by instinct.
The car will come with a set of 944 Fuchs wearing DZ03's and a set of D90's wearing Falken FK452's "
