Default FS: 3" Magnaflow cat to fit a SFR system

Under CA's new platform specific cat law I can't use this, less than 100hrs run time, new on 4/3/10. Selling for what I paid, $305.

Magnaflow p/n - CA/CE 94309 07/09

What's up with the new laws?!? This is the same CAT setup I have on my 3" exhaust so I'm wondering if I'll have trouble next time... Would you mind enlightening me? Also wondering if you're going by the book, or if your smog guy said it's a no-go? Thanks!

I have that exact converter and have passed smog twice with it, both times at hyper-picky "test only" stations that would make the founders of Greenpeace proud. Having said that, the number you posted does not seem to appear on the official list here:

My cat is aftermarket and I'm due for smog over the next few weeks. Did they tell you to remove it?

Kevin... long time no hablo.
You know that segment of Monday night Football where they show all the goof-ups; its pretty good really. Anyway, I'm a fan of southern California but the whole state gets one comment from me...

C'mon man

Quick time line:

1st SMOG-no good
Replace O2
2nd SMOG-no good
Replace CAT - vendor knew it wouldn't pass a smog inspect under the new platform specific laws, not to mention the 3" flange was mounted so the CA number couldn't be seen from the bottom of the car. That was three and some change down the drain.
3rd SMOG-no good. By now CA has dropped the NOX limits.
Looking at a $1k smog job, I enroll in a CA program that covers $500 of repairs towards a passing smog test.
Take it to a Gold Shield station-incorrect cat cited as a "tamper". They have a specific state approved check list -- hence the new cat. Five of seven stations wouldn't even look at this car.
Installed new cat-another $three and some change.

Now I'm looking at registering it in a non smog area, aunt and uncle were close, just two miles from the boundry in Truckee.

The 951 has been illegal for seven months, screw this state. Three levels of CA gubmint control this crap.

Hey Bruce, I thought of you when I was looking at the old cat!

Too bad someone here doesn't know someone in the inspection business who could make things real easy for ya...

Just realized the old beach house my parent's just sold was in a exempt zip...damn.

Kevin, there are a few zips in SD that only require smog with a title transfer. Could always get a PO box or a friend in one of those areas.

Car passed SMOG, pre-cat leak was the true culprit.

This CAT is still available and is currently in Vegas.

Kevin,
I'm dealing with high NOx myself right now. HC and CO fine, so I'm wondering if I have a similar leak. Where was yours and how did you find it?

thanks
Gary

Hey Gary,

The smog shop suggested the joint upstream of the cat was leaking due to the high NOX. After installing the 3" exhaust I didn't notice the sound of any leak but when I removed the band clamp it was obvious the joint was loose. When I installed the new cat I used Permatex Ultra Copper under the band clamp then I used a gloved hand and a rag to "cap" the exhaust tip to see if I could hear a leak, I didn't.

The passed smog test was proof.

Avoid the CARB repair programs at all costs.
