How to tell if synchros rings are bad
How do you tell if theyre bad? I have a transmission that grinds going into 2nd 3rd and 4th, hard to get into first, and grinds going into 5th. I've opened it up and went stupid with all the gears and other crap inside the thing. I've never opened up a tranny before. Anyway, everything looks fine to me. The sychro rings slide back and forth on the shaft, and rotate about 5 degrees, is that normal?

You have to remove the gears from the shaft and check for a few things. For one, the synchro gears have to angled and sharp, not round. The inner part of the synchro has to be taken apart so you can change the "brakes".

Normally you would never wear out a 5th gear synchro, unless you dont use the clutch. So if its grinding in 2-5th, especially on upshifts, you have a clutch disengagement problem.
The synchro rings wear on the inner face. There is a friction surface that has a rough coating on it. As that wears down, the synchro does not match the shaft and idler gear speeds as well, which is what causes the dog teeth to grind. You will see damage on the dog teeth.
