Default Turbo is out, now what?

So my turbo (26/6) was blowing too much oil and had some shaft play, so while I was replacing the alternator, I thought why not go all the way. Turbo is out and off for a rebuild, and I'm considering what that implies I aught to do:

Majestic offers an upgraded rebuild which offers better flow and efficiency. I've been in a car running this turbo and it seems pretty noticable. Cost is about 600 give or take. Seem wise?

I'm also wondering about wrapping the downpipe with heat wrap and using the LR blanket for the turbo itself, wise money spent or not?

Anything else that should be done while the turbo is out?

A turbo upgrade which requires new injectors, maf, exhaust system, etc. is beyond my wife's comfort level.

I'm running 3" catless, 3bar FPR, accuboost, and vitesse chip (well I will be).

Thanks,

Dan

I would wrap the downpipe and get the turbo blanket. Mine creates a lot of heat and I wish I would have wrapped it.

ooooo....I'm about to do my turbo...where can you get that down pipe wrapping and turbo blanket???

I'm planning on pulling the AOS and redoing the seals, at a minimum. I already replaced all the hoses and pulled my cycling valve from under the intake on the last trip in when I was installing my MAF otherwise that would be on my list.

AOS reseal
Couple of O-rings and a VERY careful alinement. Might also suggest a cleaning of the Intercooler, its on a 5yr maintenence cycle I believe.

If you are going to wrap anything to improve turbo performance, wrap the turbine volute and the exhaust inlet to the turbine; if your car still has stock headers/pipes, Porsche has already thought of this by insulation of the turbine inlet pipes. The downpipe wrap won't do anything but keep exhaust gas hot after it can do much good.

Wrapping at all assumes your engine and all its parts have no oil or flammables on them now and will not in the future. All the wraps do is hold oil in it where it can get really hot and burn. I have seen engine fires at the track form careless oil use and burning wrap.

Please do a search on this board re: majestic turbo before you commit.

Mat, Vitesse rebuilds turbos, or were you just advising me to disregard my wife's explicit and vehement instructions, and can I quote you?

John does a slick K26/8 modification which, though it is stretching the definition of "rebuild", it does somewhat fits into that category: send him a core and he sends you back a rebuilt turbo (and chips, FPR, ect.). you use stock intake/exhaust - no modifying the water line or other monkeying around. It is $2K.

Flip comments aside, I do not have a recommendation for a good rebuilder - I was hoping someone might do that for me. Just do not send it to Waco, TX.

I have used, and he is top notch, does all the work himself, give him a call, or an e-mail.. but be patient, he keeps his own hours.. and works by himself.

I spoke with Tim, and he was my first choice, but he has told me that he can no longer get the oem parts for rebuilding 26/6 and has no experience with the new non oem parts. He therefore expressed a reluctance to go forward until he can vouch for the quality of the parts. I'm left with a gaping whole where my turbo used to be. I left a message for him yesterday and will follow up asap, until then I'm seeking options.

I'm going to check out what John offers, but 2k cuts deep into my poker money.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking now.
