86 951 3rd gear power loss
Need some help. Changed belts, rollers and water pump. Set up using WSM and P9201 Tool. Car runs through 1st & 2nd gear 5600 rpm, shift to 3rd and dies out at 4250 rpm and have to shift back to 2nd gear to keep rpm's up. What is the cause of this power drop??? Engine idles great, Rev's up to 6000 rpm no problem. Checked vacuum lines found one that had a split and replaced, still same problem. No fuel in vac line from FPR or Fuel Dampener. What am I missing??? Any and all help much appreciated as I don't have much hair left to pull out.

What do you mean "dies out"? Can you describe that more? Is it a cut-out like hitting a rev limiter?
What's your boost gauge doing? Still building boost? No boost? Feels like an NA car? Absolutely no acceleration at all? Any stumbling or miss fires?
How about 4th or 5th gear? Same problem?

Ok, I had a similar problem in 1st and 2nd the car ran great but in 3rd 4th and 5th it was a dog.
My problem was a intercooler coupler was bad and causing the car to leak boost in the upper gears.
I wasn't making the same boost in my lower gear so I didn't notice it.

Hello Gents, First I want to thank all who responded to my plea for help. This was the first turbo I have worked on. I have egg all over my face, but what the heck it's not the first time. I found a yellow tag up under the throttle body "Air Vent for Turbo". Well long story short I turned out the bolt, air came out and then the coolant for the turbo. I did this a couple of times until nothing but coolant came out. I know we are always burping the coolant system after coolant change until all air is out of the system and thought I had done this. Who ever said you can't teach an old dog new tricks was dead wrong.
Cheers,
Larry
