Speaker size?
can anyone tell me what size the rear speakers are in an 86 951? I am finally having the body work and paint done and want to replace the speakers while the rear windows are out. Thanks in advance! Kevin.

4x6. I actually just picked some up for my car last week. After doing a little bit of research i went with some Infinity Kappa series. They have a 4" woofer and a separate tweeter. Paid $78 on ebay, NIB! Haven't tried them out yet though.

The fronts 18x8 with 245-40-18 and the rear are 18x10 with 295-30-18. Not 100% on the fronts but I'm pretty sure. They might be 225's

Or bypass the rear and run those speaker wires to the hatch area and then you can run any size you want.
I run front 4x6 and rear 6x9 in the rear cubbies in the hatch.

That is how my car was set up by the PO. The carpet was cut and fitted with 6x9s over the rear cubbies. Honestly, not my first preference, but it does not look too bad and seems to work.

Well, right now I have an acoustic box wih two 8 inch speakers. Sounds fine but looks too Ghetto for my taste. I want to put it stock, so I'll give up some performance. I'm not a big sound type anyway. I have a decent Sony HD radio in it so power will be sufficient. My problem now is finding a set to install before the work is done..lol.

I have my rear speakers apart right now. I will post pics for you. You can run a 4x6 attached to the stock adapter plate or remove the plate and run a 5 inch speaker. I will measure the size of the adapter plate in the morning. I have not decided what setup I am going to run yet. There are two really nice infinity speakers that have a very high 94 decibel efficiency. They will require less power since speaker efficiency is a logarithmic value. Go to the klipsch speaker web site to get a good description of what I am referring to. Basically the deck power will be enough for a 94 decibel speaker to sound great and have a high volume.

Check Clarks-Garaqge.com
It makes no sense to put speakers in the *** end of these cars! I believe 4x6 is the right number, but the depth is very important. See Clarks.
You guys are wasting money and time blasting sound into rear hatch glass.

The easiest on an 86 is to cut a little sheet metal where the 4x6's mount and install 6.5 2-ways or components back there. Make an adapter plate or get one from an 88+ car. I ran Polk Momos and they sounded excellent, no need for a sub IMO.

B. I have had them set up laying flat and tilted towards the front and there is very little difference.
Glass reflects/directs sound just like a wall does with some absorbtion. Actually, with tinted/treated windows it sounds even better.
Your statement would hold true if you drove around with the hatch open.
