86 951 Driver

Is there a good guide out there that explains what to do as far as modding these cars? Manual boost controller, chips, FPR what to do? I'm a total newbie to modding a turbo car. I understand how a boost controller works and what not and how the turbo engine works as well, I'm just not into what chips and all that will do for the car.

I would always go for the big exhaust first. before
It always works no matter what brand or size you get . its not RPM of fuel specific .its never too big there are no drawabacks
the little boost enhancer thing for $40 is also a no brainier i think..
chips is a long list of threads ..there are plenty of good ones that have several different maps for different injectors set on the FQR.

I think the right set up for standard turbo is 55lb injectors and according chips ..
And that is big enough for a very small turbo upgrade but those with big turbo need bigger injectors

Regardless what direction you decide to go, sounds like you need to do a lot of reading...then read some more. Do things right the first time, it's cheaper than redoing things after they break.

agreed, i havnt modded mine yet and ive had it for 6 months, the PO did some basic mods which i kinda like.

but if you want to see some numbers with out spending 20k
- a decent set of chips, i have guru racing,
- new wastegate, TiAL 38mm from SFR with the adapters.
- MBC black ****
- MAF or MAP sensor (barn door afm delete)
- test pipe

you can get the rong chips there are heaps of different boost controllers and different opinions you cannot go wrong with an exhaust .

Probably a good idea to learn to drive the car and become familiar with what you want before you modify it. It's a cool car in stock form.

86 951 Driver

I am going to be keeping the car stock for a while. I want to make sure it is running to its full potential and want to fix everything like the Cruise(not sure if it works yet), and the sunroof. After that I wanted to start reading what were some good ways to mod this car. After I saw that site for the 951MAX HP chips I was shocked. I don't know if that was stock or what but 300 WHP is pretty damn good for some chips and what not.

you're not going to get 300whp with just chips the k26/6 will be on its limits so will the injectors, and to get full potential from the turbo you will need a free airflow to the turbo with no restriction.

It's like this, say your friend has a nissan skyline r33 on 13psi with basic mods like exhaust, mbc, bigger intercooler... and your 951 is sitting on 15psi with an exhaust, upgraded wastegate, mbc, So you both race and the 951 wins, he would say 'oh if i was on 15 psi i would beat you' but he cant go on 15psi because his turbo will blow into pieces (which is true) i dont know how this is relevent but it makes sence some how.

the ceramic turbine that featured briefly in r32s was a little frail but it certainly didn't fly apart at 15 psi what more likely killed removing the blow off valve and listing to fully sik "cho choo cha cha" Sound on the advice of the Rajab bros

You can mod the car quite a bit and make big hp. You can get 40-50 hp from a good chip. That is a pretty easy mod.

My advice is to make sure the car works good in stock form first. Then and only then add boost. Now if you have a bad turbo right now you can consider a replacement, but for now keep it stock.

I have a 88 Turbo S that is stock. At 230 whp it makes enough power to get my in trouble. I have chosen not to chip the car. Maybe one day, but for now I am just going through some maintenace. I have owne the car since 1997 so I know will ok with stock power.

Sort out the car first then decide on a budget.

Chips would be the first step but in order to use them most need extra stuff (3bar fpr, boost controller etc) some come with, some dont.

I'd say a great starting point would be the following.

Chips and whatever is needed to support the chip (boost controller, 3bar fpr), a vac hose kit, and either shims for wastegate or a new aftermarket.

That alone will do wonders for the car.

I don't know about you guys, but after the exhaust, mbc, and chipset....I got bitten by the bug. $20k later, and theres still more that I want to do. Boost is like a drug. I run 23 psi on 110 race gas lol. Listen to the guys on here though, they give good advice. KEEP IT STOCK AS LONG AS POSSIBLE.

I've said this before, but I've modded cars, motorcycles, airplanes, etc. Chips/FPR/MBC are as far as I'm going on my 951. Search on here for the last few months for an education in how wrong things can go and what people will defend as "worth it". Its still cool car at 275HP. For good reading, I look at the posts now about "my car wont run, wont idle, overheats, blows smoke, etc". Its 25 years old. Unless you have tons of money, be careful mod dancing with this devil.
