Default Finally, about to get started. Need painting advice.

It has been one thing after another, since Dec, from moving into a new shop, ironing out bugs w/ new(used) tow vehicle and also with my new DD.

BUT now it begins.

Pulled the engine at a shared shop with my mechanic, which is about 1.5 hrs away. I wanted to get it back to the shop at my house and do some work while the engine is out.

Rather the replace the suspension, only to remove again when I reinstall the engine. I had this contraption made. I got interesting looks by passers by. I will need to modify it a bit more for ease of turning, but was in a hurry to grab the car.

Basically new mods planned mods are

Rollbar
Big blacks
k27
DTA standalone s-60pro
MO30
Upholstered dash and interior upgrades.
968 wing
Paint and alot of body work

Will post along the way showing progress and looking for suggestions.

It is a bit taller then I wanted, but it actually helped to manuver the dolly. The shop that fabbed it for me had not gotten around to the handle. I will probably bring it to the shop next time I load it up, so it can be appropriately placed.

Nice part was the 5 minute install and out the door. holding it in place while the bolts were started, not so fun.

It has actually been nice, The height functions like rolling jack stands .

I have to pace myself, since another holdup is that I picked up a strange Mycobacterial infection in my hand. FOr the last month I have had to take IV antibiotics and had 2 open surguies on my hand. I am not sure how I picked it up, other then maybe an oil air Kellogg air compressor I am rebuilding. The water had been in there probably 3+ years.

OK, I have the A/c lines and hard line to the slave cylinder pulled and plan to have them modified by Connector specialist, which is a Parker store.

I am looking for suggestions of what else to do while apart.

I am planning to install a easy Firewall passt hrough for additional wiring or vaccum lines. I am also looking for suggestions for sources to find one that will keep exhasust fumes to a minimal. I had ran the lines through the DME harness, which worked OK, Untill pulling the harness, so I want a dedicated pass through.

Ok, starting w/ the engine bay

I sprayed engine degreaser on the engine bay, then I lightly pressure washed off. Then w/ dawn soap and a sponge I wiped down and rinsed again.

I would like to find a similar color paint in a can and spray the engine bay. I will probably prep and spray an area at a time. I am not looking for perfect result, but rather a descent uniform coverage that will hold up to engine temps.

I need advice on how to procede,

-any other preping needed, such as fine sandpaper or acetone, before using spray paint.

-What is the best brand and source of paint to use? I was thinking maybe the VHT paint and then a clear semi-gloss protectant.

Any other suggestions please let me know.

EDIT; AFter pulling the windsheild washing tank, and a few other items to get started, I am beginning to think, the spray can approach, may not be the best idea, uless it can have a good outcome. ????? Need sugestions.

Factory paint holds up pretty well. My local auto paint supply store, 'K.C.Paints' will mix up any amount and put it in a spray can too. The dolly looks trick, dont lie, did you try throttle steering it around the lot?

Having a paint shop put the paint in a spray can sounds nice and easiest. Would the reult be any close to using a spray gun??

If not maybe I should try my hand at using a spray gun. I would one that would have a small spay area, because I am not pulling some wires, hoses and a few other things. I plan to just spay around or over them if not masked.

Any reccomendations on type or model of spray gun. syphon or gravity feed??

What size tip would I look for? Any information or reccomendations for a sprayer that will not be as technique sensitive.

Thanks
Steve

Steve, if you are going to be trying to spray the engine bay with most of the hose still in I would say to use a spray can vs a gun because when you paint with a gun paint will end up everywhere unless you were goign to use a small airbrush.

Just my 2 cents.

I would not say I am leaving most of the hose, but few, and I was going to leave the hard lines in the engine bay and the cuise lines. I still have stuff to remove, esp if using a spray gun.

I was thinking if there was a gun, that had a descent resiviour and a small tip, that would be ideal. Just not sure what to look for.

But if the quality will be close, I would opt for the cans, just not sure how good the result would be. Any online stores that would be reccomend that would have a good quality paint? Esp for engine bay.

Thanks
Steve

I know what you mean by having a small tips. That would be ideal.

The only recommendation I have for paint is to try and give a Sherwin Williams Automotive paint shop a call if you have any by you. Thats where I went when I was trying to get stuff to paint my miata.

The quality all depends on how much time you spend practicing with the gun. But I would just try and find some hi temperature paint in cans and spray can it.

Okay, do you want advice on painting the dolly or something else? I didn't see a paint question...not that I could have helped much.
Cool Dolly!

I agree, although using a gun, especially in the engine bay, isn't really very difficult. It would be different on the exterior body.
That said, why not use a high heat spray paint? It would be worth pricing the difference between the off the shelf stuff, and the other custom idea, mentioned. If it's close, I'd go with factory paint.

I know it's just me, but I'd paint the bay white, so as too see leaks, etc better, but I doubt that's what you want.
