I wouldn't do anything different until you see a trend and this is the first failure I have seen like this. Parts do fail due to manufacturing issues.

Sean.....At least snapping the drive shaft is an easy and quick fix. I shredded my torque tube shaft last year....kinda proud of it in a strange way even though it was a big job to replace....you can see the nice twist in the shaft

I have seen some 928 shafts break over on th 928 board, but have not seen a 944 one break.
