Exclamation A/C charging

I need to re-charge my A/C system asap. (texas gets hot and humid in summer) I plan on using R134a to do it. Where is the low pressure fitting? From search I found that on 944's and 944S's, it's on the compressor. Is this the same for a '86 951?

The 86 comp should be near the left side shock tower.

IIRC, the fender is the HIGH pressure fitting, the low pressure fitting is below the compressor! You need to get under the car (or through the wheel well) to get to it!

Ok, had a friends father, who works on ac for a living, charge it. Ran cool for a while, but then we found a leak. Its on the rubber hose behind the headlight on the high pressure line. Is there ANY way I can replace just that rubber hose, and not that whole hard pipe?

Take it to a hydraulics shop and make sure to tell them you need barrier style hose for R134, they SHOULD be able to help, or ask your friends dad.....

You CAN have new hose put onto the old hard line! BUT it will need to be crimped on, I have HEARD that Napa has the crimpers to do it and the correct AC lines, try giving you local napa shop a call...

OR

Try calling some of these shops surrounding you, sorry can't make a recommendation for you, but one of these should be able to help!

That's for 87 and up. The 86 is on top, next to one another.

Interesting, as the PET only shows 1 part number for the lines on the turbos, and after 85.5... same for 944 online, DC auto, pelican and Paragon....

score another benefit of the early cars I guess!

Are 951s different than NAs?

My low port is up on the fender... The high port is behind the headlight.....

Doesn't matter what car, always remember BIG hose is LOW pressure. SMALL hose is HIGH pressure.

My friends dad used something called hotshot as a refrigerant that he said was the equivalent to R12. Is there any specific hose I should ask for for that?

(Sorry if I'm speaking out of turn....)

Any "good" hydraulic hose repair place should be able to make AC hoses. Get in the phone book and look at those places. I know some NAPAs do them, but every Hydraulic hose place I have been to does them as well.

I don't believe "hotshot" is approved for motor vehicles. IIRC its for use in home AC units. It contains propane and is flammable. I honestly wouldn't worry about using it, just remember if you get in a wreck hard enough to break the condenser in front of the radiator, you might have a good fire to deal with..... and DO NOT tell an AC repair shop you are using it. They will not service your vehicle, and might charge you (in court) for damaging their equipment (If they do service your system).

My '86 951 has the high and low ports right next to each other on the strut tower lines. As for the hotshot stuff, thanks for the info, I'll be sure to keep that in mind. Have you had experience with the stuff or something? lol

I'm going to eat my words . I looked it up. It appears r-414B (hotshot) IS fine for motor vehicles (EPA approved). It is only flammable above 212 degrees F, and at high pressures (Same as R-134)

MSDS

As for your ports..... BIG hose is LOW pressure. SMALL hose is HIGH pressure.

Haha thanks for looking that up. I learned from my friends dad today about the size of the hoses. He stressed the same thing to me. it seems like people commonly learn that the hard way lol.
