Default Clutch slipping at high speed/load



Well, passing 130mph the other day in 4th gear I noticed a clutch/brake smell and that the rpms seemed to be climbing faster than the speed. Sounds like my clutch is slipping, eh?

How many miles have you guys gotten on a clutch? I am around 50K miles, 15K of which at 17-18psi and the rest at 15 psi and I drive the car pretty hard (without abusing it)

Is there anything terribly wrong with just replacing the clutch disk (i.e. reusing the pressure plate) ? Is it worth getting something beyond the Sachs disk?

The cup or 930 disk has stiffer springs in the center part... As long as your PP and flywheel surfaces are OK, no reason not to reuse them.

But it might be wort while to get a higher clamping force pressure plate, since it will all be apart anyway!

when I had mine done after years of hard driving and 15-18psi, all that was changed of major parts was TO bearing and disk; which I went with the Cup disk.

The Cup disk with 18-20 psi and about 330-350whp has not slipped at all.

The cup disk also eliminates the 6 little damper springs on the stock disk -- those little guys are prone to snap, sometimes at any early age, requiring a whole new clutch since they get wedged in there and screw everything up.

Doesn't seem worth it not to also change the pp, throw out bearing, guide tube, pilot bearing, etc. You can generally get the flywheel turned for cheap--I'd at least do that personally. You can check the rms at the same time.

If your in there, I would definitely look at a better clutch disk - especially if you plan on re-using the PP. The southbend feramic sounds like a good option, IMO.

The Southbend clutch is working greet for me, though I'm not sure I'd use that disk with a used pp and flywheel. I have a hunch the feramic side might complain a bit with an unmachined clamping surface.

If you got 50k slip-free miles out of a stock clutch, I'd be inclined to stay stock and just switch to a cup disk.
