I'm pretty sure I've seen it, but perhaps I'm thinking of the OS brand? Been a while since I've looked.

I still don't see a 944 LSD option at Kaaz or OS Giken. Also the Guard Transmission web page is off line at the moment. A QDF4Q Quaife was the only option I could check out online & see pricing for.

Patrick - thos LSDs you and Sean got a hold of were more or less a one-off weren't they? or is that purchase option still available in Oz or US ? Quaife is looking pretty good value at the moment.

Guard LSD is around $2250 and OS Giken $1990.
The OS Giken is praised by some and criticized by some. I can't make up my mind of which one to get (when it's time).

I know there is a 968 version available of the OSG, but that figures as it would fit some rear engined variants. Some of the 968 guys were praising it highly, but perhaps that's coming from people who have run without any LSD in their cars, so, hard to say. They sound interesting at the very least.
Not 100% on the 951 options? Pretty sure I read a 'heated' thread on Rennlist some time ago between people with vested interests in either camp. Might be worth searching for.

Not a one off as such Wayne, but sort of similar in terms of availability and price. Come out of Melbourne, but they will probably just keep putting orders for single items on the back burner while they supply the large orders from overseas.

I think an LSD is always a good idea. I almost waited to get a 944 turbo until I found one with a LSD since I drive year round, but I got a really good deal on my car so I just sucked it up and thought I could add it later. It seems that these cars cost so much to put an LSD into. I don't understand why. Why is there such a cost associated to it?

I figure while I'm in there I might as well pick up a turbo-S trans to get the hardened gears - though I too wonder if it's really worth it. How many ppl here run around with 300+hp on stock non-tS transmissions and don't have problems?
I have a 1988 951 with LSD, I havnt had a problem.

It's a Porsche enthusiasts website not a council meeting, I hate seeing nice cars sitting in the slow lane and I'm not satisfied if I don't get my car sideways at least once each time I drive it:

Ok rant over.

The factory LSD's are very good, strong and wear very well. All the clutch pack LSD's use the same principles. The factory is a ZF unit. The only draw back is the limitation on lock up ratio's. Factory tranny's with LSD's are very cheap now, with the market as it is. There is no reason to change from factory unless your looking for a higher locking ratio. Save your money, just buy an LSD tranny, swap it in and sell your non LSD.

When you buy a used Transmission you don't know for sure if the LSD will be working or what. Thats the problem. I would love to get one off of ebay or a wrecker but they demand such a high price. Where could I find a LSD tranny for under $1000?

I will add that my factory LSD with 115k miles & some track time, fails the torque test pretty miserably (1 tire on the ground, 1 up in the air)... but it's still good enough to avoid the 1 wheel peel out of corners and spank both tires.

No reason to spend $2k on a Torsen diff when you can just buy a trans already with factory LSD and avoid the additional labor charge for opening up the trans.

Well, that is, unless you drive flat out.

Hold one wheel (put it on the ground), apply torque to the other ... measure the torque.

Actually 10 Nm is only ~6 ft lb... the test I did on my car only went so far as "wow that is really easy to turn"

I bit the bullet and put a Guard torque-biasing diff in the car. It was $1650 + $100 for a gear to drive the trans cooler pump.

I've only managed one autocross event with it so far since my car was unexpectedly down for a month and I missed an event... but so far it's pretty nice.

Agreed!

I had a non-cooled, non-LSD 951 trans. I picked up an AOR (cooled and LSD, plus no need to convert the LSD when it's due for a rebuild) for $1000. WAY cheaper than buying any sort of LSD and having it added to my old 951 trans, plus i got the added benefit of cooling. I wouldn't argue that it's as good as some of the aftermarket LSD options, but the price was right and it works great.
