Default The cheesehead thread

I've been searching, and there must be 1023060458720384723 threads that talk about a cheesehead being needed here, and there...

So, what sizes of Cheeseheads are on a 944? I don't care about the location of such bolts, but if I wanted to take every single cheesehead bolt off of a 944, what all sizes would I need?

I want/need to buy a set, but I want to make sure the set I buy doesn't leave a size or 2 out (because those will be the sizes I need)!

Thanks,

I only use the 8mm. Usually for the axles and the pressure plate.

Clark's garage mentions sizes (without length) and where they are used: http://www.clarks-garage.com/work.htm

I have used three sizes so far.

8 mm on the CV shafts
10 mm on the cam bolt
12 mm on the transmission bolt under the end cover.

Why do all of you people call triple square bolts cheeseheads???

And I THINK there's some engineering reason why the cars use them...I believe it's that the internal mating surfaces prevent damage (although it collects a crapload of dirt) and the triple square design handles high torque better than Torx. Or something like that.

I wouldn't mind them at all, IF it weren't so hard to find the damn tools to fit them!

they use the term as the heads are made of cheese instead of good hard steel and the one used in the head is so shallow you have to be dead square to apply any torque to it they have zero tolerence for misalignment I'm not convinced they can take any more torque than any thing else ..

I agree - I'll take a cap screw any day over a cheesehead...

I came across this exact question the other day and did some research. Snap On calls them a triple square. Our Snap On Rep. that came into my dealership gave me a big long sales pitch on how their "triple square" design works a lot better because the points are more pointed and give you a better contact area. blah blah blah. THEY ARE THE SAME... As you already know. I went to Checker and bought me a ( cheezeheads, torques, triple square ) set for $10. They worked great for my clutch job. AND yes they allow higher torque assuming that they seat all the way into the bolt..

Torx is an internal 6 point, triple square is an internal 12 point.
