Anyone here have a CA legal LS1 conversion?
Title pretty much says it all. The Renegade units looks impressive. They say they're capable of meeting CA smog, but I'd want someone to take liability that it's actually met. I'd hate to spend $10K+labor and end up with something I couldn't drive.

I thought in the state of California you can't do engine swaps? I was under the impression that they'll fail your car for having a stock engine that doesn't appear to be stock. Might be kinda hard to explain the corvette logo on the valve covers...

I used to be a smog tech in Ca a long time ago so things may have changed but I believe the same rules still apply.
Corvettte motor would not be a problem, the motor needs to be the same age or newer than the car. If going in a car it must be a car motor not a truck motor and all the applicable emission control equipment on the OEM motor must still function.
After the swap ypu would have to take the car to a BAR referee station and if everything is there and functions they give you a sticker and from that point on you can get it smogged anywhere like a regular car.

There was one on the LA craigslist that was a renegade kitted car that passed Cali emissions.
Key is to use a motor newer than the chassis and retain all the emissions parts related to that motor. Car gets inspected by the referree and you're all set.

I sold my CA legal conversion last year, 1987 951 with a 2002 LS1 out of a Camaro. I did the swap myself with the Renegade kit. Like others have said, the engine needs to be the same year or newer than the chassis and all of the smog equipment from the donor vehicle needs to be installed and working. This includes the Obd2 plug and the check engine light.
