Default Transaxle fill levels

How important is the exact volume of gear oil in the transaxle?

The reason I ask is I've just changed the transaxle oil (used Nulon 75W-90 synthetic to refill), and I ended up putting in about 0.5 litres more than I got out!

I put in exactly 2.6 litres, which was a little over full (dribbling out the fill plug when I removed the fill hose), but I notice Clark says he filled it to the fill hole, instead of 6-8mm below.

I took it around the block, and it feels a bit "heavier" than it did... not quite as free revving perhaps? Could be my imagination -- I'll take it for a longer run tomorrow.

In any case I thought I'd ask if having it slightly overfilled could conceiveably cause any problems -- I can always let a bit out if that is the case.

Also interested to hear what running it with a up to 0.5 litres less than than that might do... FWIW, the tranny sounds fine (no obvious bearing noise or such), and shifting was always easy.

I just put 2 litres in mine as per FWSM specs approx fill volume, and also because Castrol Syntrax synthetic costs $30 per litre bottle.

Did you change the driveshaft seals while you were in there?

If you put the same viscosity as before, then it is your imagination. You should top it to the bottom of the plug. The .5L extra maybe was missing before.

The Nulon is cheap; only $29.95/litre at Supercheap!

I wonder what the difference between the FWSM 2.0 litre capacity and Clark's 2.6 litre capacity is down to? (It makes me feel better that the 2.0 litres I got out was at least FWSM spec.) Could the "6-8mm below the fill hole level" spec possibly account for 0.5 litre? Sounds like a lot...

And no, I didn't do the seals... I haven't got a triple square (but at least I know for sure what tool I need now).

I've always filled it up to the bottom of the fill hole, numerous times on different cars.

Then again, I have exploded 4 transaxles, so... maybe I'm doing it wrong!

No, you exploded those becuase youare drifting a car that was never meant to do it, and wants to resist the drift...

I fill to 1/4 inch (4-6mm) below the fill plug port, and like you, have never had a problem, but then I have only logged about 60K in miles on my cars... maybe I'm doing it all wrong.

I think your name says it all. Drifta944. That's the reason you keep blowing them up.

Approach I've always taken, when it starts running out of the fill hole, screw the plug in quick!

I jack the driver side of the car up to about a 45deg angle, then fill it till it comes out of the "fill" hole.

Am I doing it right?

There's at least a thousand things you can do wrong on this car. My money says you can't overfill the transaxle, at least to the extent to cause harm....

I filled mine up to the bottom of the check/fill plug hole. My gearbox felt smoother after I changed the fluid. I used redline 75W90 with limited slip additive, not sure what was in there before.

, but you can overfill to the point of leaking after it is all sealed up. saw it happen on 944 na that was raced.

Really? Exactly what car was meant to drift? And what car doesn't resist the drift?

2 of the 4 I exploded were during my autocross days, long before I got into drifting. The 3rd slowly disintegrated over time. And the 4th was indeed during a drift run.

Anyway, back on topic!!
