The original setup uses a short elbow off the engine block, then a longer S-shaped hose to the firewall/heater core connection.

I used the original S-shaped hose and cut off part of it (keeping the flared end that connects to the firewall). That's the hose you can't see in my pic abov.

I then used a new hose of the same part and cut off the flared end. This connected to the block outlet, which you can see in the pic.
