Default Dang coolant drain plug!

I can't get it tight enough to stop leaking. It isn't that old but now it's rounding on the corners from trying to tighten it so I need a new one. Are they any better options than the plastic plug?

Next time I drain the system I think I'll just deal with the mess at the lower radiator hose. The drain plug wasn't leaking before I took it out.

I just use a regular stainless metric hex head cap screw (bolt) and seal it with high tempurature RTV.
The bolt must be full tread, with the RTV applied to the last 3/8 of an inch (give or take). The RTV will stick to the bolt after vulcanizing and be reusable for multiple drainnings.
I've had no leaks with this setup, including pressure testing the system to 25 psi.

what size is the bolt? I might try this. Did you use any washer or o-ring?

Just buy a new plug. All of the vendors sell them.

The O-ring around your plug is worn out. A new plug has just be just past finger tight to seal.

If you strip the plastic threads on the radiator using a real bolt.... then what?

I'll just order a new one. I missed the window on a temp plate and emissions testing anyway.

I'm suprised it failed though it's only 5 years old and wasn't leaking until I took it out and reinstalled.

At least that gives time for me to get a mityvac fluid evacuator plus. That should eliminate my coolant draining mess.
