Default CV joint circlip re-install

I can't get the circlip back on. I have the washer, then the CV joint on the axel, so now the circlip goes on, but there is not enough clearance for the circlip to fit into the groove. It seems like the washer needs to be compressed (since it is bowed) to make enough clearance. Are there any tricks to getting the circlip back on?

You probably have the center section on the wrong way around. Turn it around and see.

I found a write-up from an Audi forum that recommended putting a socket over it and whacking with a hammer to get the circlip to seat. I tried that and it seated right away.
