Default machine shop in no. virginia for headwork?

anyone know where I can get my head refreshed and have a broken exhaust stud removed in the md/va/dc area?

or, if someone has a refreshed head they're looking to sell I'd consider that option as well.

Karl,
Many NOVA wrenchers use:

Allied Industrial Machine Service (703) 533-8355

1245 W Broad St Rear
Falls Church, VA 22046
(703) 533-8355

They will do a nice job on your head, and they also have the Sunnen machines and the knowledge to handle Alusil work.

Justice Racing Engines in Winchester is very experienced with 944 engines. They are working the block and head for my 951 right now.

You might also want to consider Mike Mount at Burtonsville Performance. He handles the machining work for some of the local P-car specialists.

I've had a number of people recommend MM for some 968 work that I plan to have done this winter.

Thanks for the tips... I'll probably use Allied since they seem to be the closest. Any recommendations on what I should have them do exactly? My knowledge is kind of limited in this area.

Typica machining run for a head refresh:
- check all valve springs for length, and vale retainer hardware for ware - replace as required
- check all valves for length and condition - replace as required
- new valve guides
- check and grind valves
- valve seat dress grind
- mating surface skim cut
- leak test if you want one

I shipped my head for 20 bucks to Memphis Motorwerks in ATL. Extremely happy, just tell Mike to go refreash the head and drill out the exhaust stud.

Any shop will be happy to reinstall the stud but just have them include the stud with the head uninstaled. It's way easier to reinstall the headers and everything if you put the stud in later... so i'm told. I'm not there yet, couple more days.

Tysons Machine in Sterling. Simon is the owner and operator. I have used him quite a bit and he does great work. I take my personal stuff to him despite previously working for companies that used some of the vendors mentioned here. Take that for what it is worth. He does all the work himself. He does not give it to some kid in the back to practice with.

You are looking to get the head a)pressure tested. b) valve job. He will check it over and give you an estimate for exactly what you need. As far as the valve springs go, if they have been in service for more than 50k miles replace them.

I just paid about $700 to do a regular "performance-oriented" refresh with most of the things mentioned in this thread. I have seen used heads go for as little as $300 on here but the whole reason i did mine was to know that my head was perfect.

*SIDENOTE* kinda fun haven the old 944t sound like a harley-davidson with the exhaust leak.

I don't know when the head was last serviced - car has *at least* 185k miles on it, so I figure it probably needs something. Hopefully this won't cost me more than $300 or so.

well I just dropped it off at Allied... they quoted $500 for the labor on the valve job plus $40 for new valve guides.

Ding ding ding. Winner. Ive had 2 heads redone by Simon, and he charged me ~350. He pressure tested it, did the valves, and even blasted it clean. Looked brand new.
