I have been wondering about the purpose of a red band in between the 50-60Km zones on my speedometer. After seeing a couplw US cars, they don't have this red mark. I assume the Canadian market received the same speedo as the European market as we are in Kms.
Anyone have any idea what the purpose of this mark is? See attached pic.

It is a bit odd they made it red, since red bands on instruments generally mean you are out of the intended operating range. I'd guess Canada had some quirky regulation and Porsche didn't want to add another color to their process...

Thats a good guess Fergus. I was thinking the same thing, although it seems to be on most of the ROW cars. Is this a common city speed limit then?
I thought it might be max speed in first gear as well, as it is a red marking.
Any of the European contingent out there have an idea?

Every German car I've ever owned has had it, regardless of gearing or transmission configuration. I'm guessing it's as Fergus says.
Very nice car, by the way. I'm sure I've seen it driving around town!

Well that must have been your car I was checking out at Canadian Tire yesterday around 4:00pm. Do you have a bunch of parts and stuff in the back? I saw your turbo front end and had to see if it was a 951. Your car looks great. I love the white. Great to see more older Porsches around. We should get together sometime. PM me and I'll give you my number etc.

50 & 60 km/h are the most common city limits in the european countries. That's why there is a red band between 50 & 60.
Newer cars have also marked 30 km/h since nowadays there are more cars and older cities cannot handle even 50 km/h, so in some cases speed is limited to 30km/h. Some car have also 120km/h marked because in many european countries that is the top speed allowed in motorways/autobahns/highways
