Xpost: How to make 9" wide front wheels work?
Hi guys,
Those of you running 9" wide front wheels, what is the offset? Any use of spacers? Fender modifications? Also, the offset for an early suspension is preferable, but late works too, I can just subtract 30mm correct?
Anyone using a 255 tire?
I know you're out there
Thanks in advance,
Alex

on the '87 or the '83?
on my '92 968 (same offset as your 87) I simply run oem 17x9" 996 twists, with 275's up front, and they clear just fine, no rubbing. Bone stock alignment.

front fenders have the same clearance as my 951. Front fenders do not need to be rolled.
Your early car will require very thick spacers or adaptors to fit late offset wheels, especially 9' wheels. I advise against it, because the added weight and tire width will put extra strain on the power steering pump (if you have power steering) and make it noticeably more frustrating to turn the wheels while stopped or slow. If your early '83 does not have power steering, and you intend on driving this car on the street - I'd HIGHLY advise AGAINST it. It will feel like utter ****. (been there, done that)

oem 996 17x9" is ~55mm et. Your stock 16x7" are 23mm et.
If you insist on a 9' rim up front with an early offset suspension, you have the choice of:
- a custom 3 piece rim with a very very deep dish rim (cool & lightweight, but $$$$)
- or, a very thick and heavy spacer/adapter, making for a heavy wheel..
Is this for a track only car, or a daily driver? or something in between?

I have the stock springs (i think, 3") on the 968 and still fit 275mm with stock camber (-1.25)
With 2.25" springs I've been able to cram 285's with over -3.3 of camber!!!
every bit does count when you have wider tires/wheels and aggressive camber!

I run 17x9 ET55, 255/40 up front. Will have to try my 275/40 rears up front next
My front is now late offset but before I used a 1" spacer (25mm) - same result. I do have 2.25" springs/lots of camber but seems like Rich says you should be good even stock. Never tried mine that way...

I use the same wheel with 255s on my 951S and get a little rubbing at full lock to the right from the back inner side of the tire.

I run 245's on 17x8.5 in front and get rubbing on the rear part of the fender liner (where the fuel lines run). Hasn't worn through the liner yet, but it's a little disconcerting. I probably need to run a little spacer (5 mm or so) to take care of it.
