Another oil question...

I don't see how it wants you to drive it right away. My 951 barely wants to move if i dont let it idle for a minute or two

I don't think the manual says that it would damage the engine.
They just mean ya don't have to let it idle, at start-up, until totally warmed up. Just start it, wait a minute, and then drive away gently.
Just order the redline 10W 40 from the automotive counter at canadian tire. It takes a couple of days and they'll get it in. But, you can use other synthetics that fit the bill (higher ZDDP) which might be on the shelf (xW50 mobil 1, or amsoil)
After doing alot of research, I just think that redline is the best oil money can buy.
In colder weather you can just get the redline 10W30 and mix it with a heavier grade dino oil if you're concerned. A really good dino oil is esso XD3 15W40. It's heavy duty oil that's also good for gasoline engines, not as thick as a 20W50, and is high in ZDDP which is good for the bearings and valve train in our engines.

Some of these Diesel oils are high in detergents though which is not good.

I wish there was more canadians here ... really. Turbo Tommy thanks for the input. To add, i can't believe i can only think of about 3 users who have 944 turbos who visit the forum. There is a lot more canadian 944 turbo owners out there i'm sure.

333: I am using Castrol Syntec 5W40. It is on Porsche's latest (Sept. 25 2008) list for 1984 and newer engines, excluding the Cayenne V6, and it also says Porsche approved on the bottle (for what that's worth). It is also approved for Volkswagen TDI engines, hence the high ZDDP. My engine seems to like it.
Sebastian: The manual says 6.5 litres of oil with filter change, and yes there must be some more Canucks out there. I thought there were a couple from out west as well.
Tommy: I agree with you on the cold start-up idle thing. The probable reason Porsche does not want you to just let the car warm idling is it is not very good for the engine/oil. The oil never reaches operating temp with no engine load and could contribute to the dreded sludge buildup. The engine will warm up much more quickly if you drive away within 30 seconds of starting and drive gently (read no boost) until you see the temp gauge in the normal position.

Another Canadian
Hi Folks,
I'm from Nova Scotia and read these forums a lot although I don't post much. I'm new to 951s so I'm learning more than anything else at this point.
On the oil subject, I was using Castrol 20W50 but I've switched to Castrol 10W40 with a small drop in pressure when hot at idle (3 bar at idle, 4 or 5 bar when driving).
I don't start my car during winter storage.

Out of curiosity, what temps are you Canadians seeing up there?

Hi Andrew welcome to Rennlist. Nice to see another Canadian onboard.
Does anyone have any numbers as to how many 951's made it into Canada?
333: In south eastern Ontario where I live there is quite a range of temps. It can range from 65 F at night to 95-100 F during a hot spell (plus some wicked humidity). Usually daily temps in summer are 75 - 85 F.

This thread may help a bit, but isnt really about cold weather per se. But is has some good facts and views. ZDDP is a big thing now in the US.

Ambient Temp in NS
Thanks for the welcome Mike.
In NS, the summer temps range from 15 C to a very seldom 35C. Mostly the temps are mid 20 C. Nightime temps drop to below 20
In winter, the coldest is sometime -30 C but frequently goes above 0. I'd guess -5 is an average.
These are my own guesses without scientific backup.
Cheers
