Default Esoteric Hub/Spindle Question

Does anyone know if '87 hubs will work on '86 spindles?

I've done a search and seen all the discussion on weaker '86 spindles, etc. I know that '87+ spindles/hubs will fit on '86 control arms and maintain offset (but require camber plates) etc.

But what I'm really looking for is the ease of rotor changes that an '87+ hub will allow. If I can fit '87 hubs to '86 spindles, use '87+ rotors, and still have the whole rotor/caliper assembly fit properly, it will make general maintenance much easier.

Anyone?

You can put the 87 spindles on with out camber plates - it will work fine. You can't get as much negative camber for track use but its fine for street.

Bearings are the wrong size.

+1, the 87+ hubs take larger inside diameter bearings to fit on the 87+ spindles which have a larger diameter spindle.

If the reason is easy maintenance as you say, why not just bolt the 87+ spindles and hubs as a set on the 86 control arms. Thereby maintaining the early offset and having the ease of maintenance you desire. You seem to have done the research on this and know what is involved and as other listers have said, the camber plates are not really required unless this is a dedicated track car.

Yeah, I've read pretty much everything there is to read about the hub/spindle swap except for the hub question. I actually do have a set of 87+ hubs and spindles ready to go.

The reason I was asking about the hubs was that if I do put on the hubs and spindles, I'm going to do the whole suspension since it's a street/track car. After 9 years, I'm more than ready to move beyond the stock suspension.

I'm just not ready to spend the time to do the torsion bars in the back. So I need to get new rotors on the front, I'd rather not deal with the wonky '86 setup for that, but I'm really don't have the time to deal with the entire suspension either.

In the end, you guys are right. Just put the '87+ spindles and hubs on, get an alignment, and be done with it.

You also need camber plates, or modify and camber cam, if you want to maintain the same range of negative camber adjustment with the 87 hub/spindle on a 86 front suspension.

oh i thought only the MO30 was bigger but after checking with pelican it seems that they have a out bearing listed for post 87 wich would indicate the small dia is bigger.. comforting as i felt i had got the late ones for no reason... even on the track to you realy need all the negative camber on 18" wheels ???

There really is little difference between the Turbo S/M030 hubs & spindles and the 87+ Turbo/S2/968 hubs & spindles, other than the caliper mounting arrangement (and the M030 hubs are about 3mm longer). They use the same bearings and have the same spindle strength.

Camber needs depend on tire brand. And size of wheel has little effect of camber needed for tire wear. So if running hoosiers, for example, you need about -3 degs up front regardless of running 16", 17" or 18" wheels/tires.
