Default DME relay gets very hot and car shuts down

I have a 968 and I replaced my DME relay about 3 years ago because the car would not start. Now recently after driving for about 30 minutes intermittently the car will sputter and then eventually die out. If I pull the DME relay out it is extremely hot. When I let it cool off the car is fine for a while until it gets hot again. Is this another bad DME relay or is something else causing it to get hot?

Hot wires usually mean a poor contact, or excessive current (or short).

Clean the + wires at the battery, theyre usually exposed to rain and corroded.
