Question EDIT with new pictures. WTH is this bolt? Total coolant loss, need some tips.

I've only had this 86' 951 for a few weeks.

Bought it with a bent valve and trying to bring it back to life.

Got everything together yesterday and went for a drive. Started out fine but then started losing coolant...FAST!

Does not seem to be coming from head gasket.

It all comes out from the center front of the car, hot or cold. Let it sit for an hour or two and it will easily drop 2 gallons of coolant on the ground.

Can't find a leak!!!

Ready to pull it all back apart. Any common spots I should be looking for?

how are the hoses? I had this happen to me and it turned out to be a pin hole in the hose. It would leak when the car was running and after it was turned off until the pressure was gone.

Waterpump if it was really loose? It would leak behind the covers front and center.

Thanks.

Can you guys give me some shopping tips?

Here is what I have found so far:

-Rennbay (new water pump $295), would have to order all hoses individually
-Pelican Parts , (rebuilt WP $123.85 +$100 core), individual hoses.
-944online, Only place with a hose kit $159.95 for all the cooling hoses, WP rebuilt $119.95 + $125 core.
-Ebay. Rebuilt WP $145 no core.

Anywhere else to look? Looks like 944O has what I need at the best price.

Thoughts?

No. I have been all over the engine with a flash light.

It pours out right at the front of the car above the sway bar, just a few inches off center to the left as you face it.

Can't see an actual leak anywhere. (will pull the timing cover back off soon and see if it is in there with the water pump.)

It sounds much more likely that you left a connection or sensor loose. Can you see any water on the top of the engine? I've had a loose sensor leak at a pretty good rate.

I thought about that. I actually had a bolt lose on the top of the motor that I tightened. No coolant on the top of the motor now, none in the "valley".

All coming from somewhere in between.

Look in the timing hole of your cam gear cover -- if the coolant is coming from under the timing cover, the cam belt will be wet.

Okay,

Took off the timing cover, DRY! However, my timing belt is offset to the engine side and rubbing on the the cover, so I need to fix that ASAP anyway.

Pressure tested it and there is a leak at the back of the engine. I can't see where it is coming from but I can hear it. I could use some tips and/or additional pictures.

Looks like the hose directly at the back of the motor, maybe one connecting to the round black thing that also goes to the oil fill?! Can't actually see the leak, but this is where the noise comes from. (maybe 9, 10, 11 or 12 from the diagram above)

Anyone ever seen this area leak and run down near the front lower of the engine?

Well, I found it.

Pulled the intake back off and found the coolant passage gasket leaking on the back side fo the head. Even a touch hard to see with the intake off.

I will get a new gasket, DOH!. Thanks.

Careful....that gasket is not symmetrical. If you install it upside down, the bolt holes line up but the gasket will leak - badly! Be careful to get it on the right way up.

Also ^ +1 on Zims. Great guys, even though they're in Texas.
