engine or turbo problem!?
Hi there,
Today I was driving my 944 turbo s, and when I changed from 4-th gear to 3-rd at about 4000 rpm lots of white smoke came through the exhaust pipe. After I stoped the engine I checked to see if there was oil in the cooling fluid or vice-versa but there wasn't any. Could it be the turbo or the head gasket? I have some minor mods, such as: 4"exhaust, fuel regulator, chip, intercooler, boost controler. Any help would be great !

Hard to say whether it was oil-smoke (blue-white with distinctive smell) or coolant smoke (white-white, with its own smell). If oil smoke, and compression/leak down are good, it could be time for valve guides/seals. Things to check for bad head gasket include:
1. Check for one steam-cleaned spark plug (indicating coolant is in the chamber)
2. Lumpy idle, expecially when first starting up in the morning (wet plug missing until dry)
3. Unexpected need to vent the system (pressurize cooling system to rule out small leaks)
4. Engine runs hot after boosting, but stays cool at lower loads
5. Coolant spitting out overflow tube after/during boosting
6. foamy oil cap (could be seals if no other symptoms)
7. mixing of oil/coolant (could be oil seals if no other symptoms)
8. coolant dripping out the exhaust (once gasket is leaking bad)

I took the car to the mechanic and the problem is the head gasket. Could it be anything else more than that? Now what shoul I go for, original Porsche head gasket or Victor Reinz wide fire head gasket? Thanks
