Default Some afternoon fun....951 vs. 350Z

My longtime friend and I have been going rounds about this. He owned an 03 Track Edition w/Brembo brake package for several years and really enjoyed it. I just recently purchased my 87 951 (completey stock) and let him drive to compare.

Now, I've driven his Z a few times but my excitement for my 951 doesnt let me accurately remember much else but my last few outings to the mountains.

First off, he was hugely impressed with the 20+ year old beautiy. There was a much better feel of quality as he put it. We we're both left wanting input from others who have experience with both cars.

So, a 951 vs. 350Z, both stock. Which would be the better car overall, considering performance/buid quality/comfort?

Thanks for the input!

I have a vehement hatred for all things nissan so I'd say 951 easily. Nissans have a helluva lot of cheap *** plastic parts in them and yet remain heavy *** cars that fall apart ten years down the road. Oh, and they're ugly (cue mental images of GT-R). GT-R aside, I've never liked the look of the 350z. Only Nissans I've ever liked were the old Pathfinders and that's mainly due to the fact that we used to pile into my buddies on friday and saturday nights party hopping so there were good memories attached to that SUV

I would say the 350z is easier to drive everyday, and is a much more reliable car to start with. Stock for stock, the 350Z is also faster than a regular 951.

That being said, I do like the 350Z alot, but I still prefer a nice 951. Mine isnt stock anyway, and I have no problem digesting Zs on my way to work....even if it does leak a little of everything when I park....

I figured that would be the first thing to everyones mind...to different class levels (buid quality wise). I wasnt impressed with anything interior wise and dont really care for the exterior (do like the G35 coupes though) but it is a capable car. It felt strong and handled pretty well. Though not as balanced as the P.

A friend of mine had a 350Z a few years ago, and it felt a lot quicker off the line than my stockish 951 does now, but at speed (like 30 - 100), I think my 951 is as fast or faster than the Z. The Z is a little bit deceiving though, the torque curve is flatter than ours, so you don't feel as much of a rush but it scoots pretty good.

Just out of curiosity where do you get these numbers from? I have no problem taking 350z's in my 740il. Ive taken around 3-4 Z's in that 7 series in the straightline.

Granted the 740 is making like 282HP stock, and with my exhaust mod (not dynoed, but Dinan claims 11+hp), im probably around 300HP to the wheels. I think my black 951 would pull on it.

I have had a 2000 BMW 740il and a 2001 BMW 750il. I cannot see either of these cars taking a 350Z in a staight line. They are just too heavy and geared to be highway cruisers. The BMW 750il is without a doubt the finest car I have ever owned (I have had Mercedes S classes as well) but it was no speed demon.

Never driven the 7 series but I know they have some *****. I cant imagine they can hang with the Z but who knows? On paper the Z is a little quicker in a straight line than the 951 from what I've read online.

On paper my roommates 2008.5 Mazdaspeed 3 should beat me in a straight line. I have the autothority stage 2 chips which add (supposedly) 48 hp and a 3" exhuast from the cat back which is probably a minimal gain. The MS3 is 273hp and 280 ft/lbs of torque and he has an intake which should add 10 hp. I walked him to about 20 car lengths from a roll starting at 25 to 150. It's all about the area under the curve. I believe that a stock 951 *could* take a stock 350 but it'd definitely be in 2nd and 3rd gear where the 951 will catch and pass the 350 cuz the 350 has a lot of torque off the line.

Compare 1/4 mile trap speeds. A 350z has a small edge over a stock 951. BUT people's launching skills vary so much that either could embarrass the other from a dig.

As soon as you put some mods in the 951, it will run away from the 350.

I'm sorry, but I think stock vs stock...951 can hang with a 350Z. I've ran away from one on the highway before that had exhaust and intake...all I had was crappy authority chips making 238/248 to the wheels.

The Mazda 3's though...watch for those cars! I got suckered into a race one night with one claiming to be stock except for his intake. I thought the exhaust was loud and big for stock, but I was none the wiser. We went out and this car put probably 10-15 cars on me from a dig to 140...then from a 40 roll, me brake boosting...didn't start to pull until about 80...where he again put numerous cars on me at 150. Come to find out, it was a 300whp car with mods.

I about pulled my hair out until I found out it was modded. There was no way my car with more power and less weight had gotten beat by this wagon. So don't always believe what people tell you. Needless to say, that wagons *** is grass when I get the turbo back together!

Carbon,
I had disappointing encounter with an SRT-4 when I was nearly stock... as soon as you throw a real turbo on the car, then you won't even worry about many cars at all.
