Default Would the 996 radio fit the 944?

Do you think any major modification is needed?

I don't know about that one, but a whole lot of aftermarket radios will fit. If the original harness has not been cut, then you can get connectors to make the install much easier.

I think there was talk about the boxster's radio display being hard to read due to the viewing angle being different...

There is a issue with the Becker CDR220. There is a replacement faceplate available, but it's $100 (plus $100 core). I have a CDR220 that I'd like to sell, but it has the limited view faceplate. I haven't heard of other factory installed Porsche radios with the same issue, but it could be a problem.

What is the make/model of the HU from the 996? That would be considerably more helpful in figuring out if it will work or not.

I know there it's a problem even if you fit the face plate the cdr will start in protected mode. I also have the bose amp that comes optional but it seems that only recives optical imput signal. CDR 220 starts on CAN BUS and I think it might need to be cracked to work on other cars.

The Becker CDR220 only has a security code - there's no CAN bus connection at all. Are you talking about a CDR23 (BE6612)?
