Default if you think working on a 951 is tough...

The car in the pics is an '01 Audi A6 2.7T. This was a project from a few weeks back, however I just had a chance to upload the pics and wanted to share how involved turbo replacement is on a 2.7T. I know this is somewhat off-topic, however it is meant to be a post for all those 951 owners out there that get discouraged when working on their own cars!

Hey Dude, that's cheating. You have a lift, shop etc. I bet you even looked at the manual!!
Kidding, what are these Germans thinking when they build this stuff?
That said, my best pal works for the Ferrari dealer and I own a lot of Italian made processing equipment. The Germans win by a mile. The Italians have some sort of mechanical genetic quirk.

Actually thats a lot easier than the 951 engine R&R.
If you do a search there is a thread from my S4 belt / water pump job a couple of years ago...

AGREED, I had a rebuild a couple of Campagnolo brake/shift levers on a bike. They are the most f***ed up things I have ever seen.

My sisters audi of the same era is easier to work on. Granted its tight under there, but it seems everything is more logically placed.

haha read the manual for replacing the alternator.

step one: disconnect battery
step two: remove front of car

my friend has a S4 and we have replaced the turbos 3 times already on i(K03s) so this time(they blew again) we are going to go all out and replace them with GT28s and a built 3.0 engine.

were so good at it we can do a turbo replacement in less than 5 hours

2.7TT is about the worst engine on these Audis.

Now I understand why someone discouraged me when I was thinking of getting a S4.. Now it makes sense why 2.7T audi cars drop in value when the get close to 100K miles. I guess the cost to replace the turbos can exceed the value of the car!

Don’t fall for the gloom and doom you hear on the 2.7tt S4!
I have one with 120k miles, stock turbos, stock everything and it has seen quite a few track days. The only engine work has been one water pump / belt / rollers job.
The ones that ‘blow up’ are usually running a lot more boost and adding 100ft lbs to stock power. We all know what happens to a 951 when you do that without being careful!
I would put the S4 right in the same league as the 951 when it comes to reliability. Well kept ones without big mods last forever. Highly stressed / under designed ones break all the time!

BTW - removing the front of the caris a peice of cake (after the first time!) - its designed to be removed for easy engine work I wish my 951 was as easy!

Holy C*&%, I'm removing the S4/A6 of my list of cars I want.
Funny, I looked at one that needed a turbo, glad I didn't bite.
I was always curious about the sequential turbo setup though.
Note to self, forget about the 2.7tt swap for my Audi TT

The above pictures and a failing transmission were why I was happy to unload by A6. Brilliant car in a lot of ways, but OMG, I've never ached for a SBC quite as badly.

A little time consuming the first time around, we've done dozens of those at the shop. The 2.7Tis a great powerplant as long as you have an aftermarket warranty paying for repairs It's even better with some bigger turbos.

Also, never put bigger than stock turbos on a 2.7T with an automatic transmission, trust me.
