Has anyone done a timing / balance shaft belt change and re tensioned the belts without the Porsche tensioner that runs about $650, there has to be an alternative please help. Thanks

Ive done a few belt jobs and have used the 9201 (factory tool) on occasion. In my opinion its tough to use and i have a difficult time getting consistent results with it.
Bruce Arnn makes an alternative called the 920x that is much easier to use and easily gives consistent results. The other nice thing is the belt tension can be adjusted in 'real time', so no need to lock tensioner, rotate engine, check with tool and repeat like the 9201. I have used the 920x on a number of belt jobs over the past year or two and have never had problems. Its also considerably cheaper than the 9201.

^ +1 on both counts.
The 9201 is good to use with the engine on a stand, but a real bear to use with the engine in situ. repeatability is also a challenge.
I bought the Arnworx 920x kit two weeks back for a waterpump belts & rollers job on a friend's car. The tool is terrific. It bolts in place for a fixed reference, and the readings are very repeatable. Highly recommended.

The 920x kit is $190 + freight.
The 'everything Bruce makes, in a deluxe carrying case' kit might be close to $300 delivered.
His combo pin wrench is a perfect equivalent of the factory 9200 tool. Really the easiest way to R&R balance shaft rollers.

I have been tensioning my own personal cars with no tool at all for over 8 years. I have a good feel for it and did it mainly to win a $25 bet with a friend that it would last 5 years. It lasted that and more. On the 951 I have now I've changed the belt 4 times with no tensioning tool.
On all customers cars, I use the arnworx tool for thier piece of mind. It's a very nice tool and well worth the savings over the factory one.
