These days, the way parts are swapped in and out, you really need to look it up by VIN or by using the option codes located on the sticker located between the two tail lights under the rear carpet.

Rolled / welded rear fender lip.

Directional front rotors and big brakes (like a 928 S4).

Perhaps a split-back rear seat???

180 MPH vs 160 MPH speedo???

Measure front sway bar diameter with a caliper.

Check interior for funky maroon plaid???

If that doesn't work you could always try the boring "Turbo S Registry"

http://www.geocities.com/motorcity/pit/4786/

Let us know what you find out!

Quickest way to tell is to see how many vacuum line atachement points are between the 3rd and 4th runner on the intake manifold. 1 for non S and 2 for S.
Looking for bigger brakes only helps if you have a comparison!

Forgot these three.

Trans cooler loop on transmission.
Adjustable front spring perches and adjustment tab on top of strut.
16" Cup wheels. 7.5" front, 9" rear.

Chris, compare to front caliper the rear of the car. Fronts are clearly larger to the novice.

Add the rolled fenders and intake fittings, and you should be looking at a Turbo S. But verify the vin before you write the check.

I will check these things today. I wish I knew what to look for on the frame gussetts, those would have been hard to swap!!

Front brakes should be the same as your S4's.
On the shortblock should be printed both M44/52 and letter J (1988).

My car has a two-port manifold and it is a non-s car. Seems cars that year (88) were sort of a mixed-bag.
