The E 36 chassis is faster than a 951. More power is available from the 951 but it will be a wash vs the M3 chassis unless you build a very expensive well modified 951. Chassis and brakes will trump power on only the most power hungry of tracks and a 400 whp N/A M3 is more accessible than you would think , upping the anti again ........

Track car = M3

Street car = 951

Dude buy back the M3 you are going backwards if you want a track/street car , instead buy a euro motor for your M3 ...or get one from one of the newer M's if you have to have a porsche go for the 968 .
I looked into a euro M3 swap when I had my E36. You are looking at an easy 8-10K installed, and only 60-80 more HP. And anything more than 120hp/liter NA is out of most of our budgets here, although possible with a true BMW motorsport engine.

I found the 951 a lot more fun than the E36. I love having the transmission in the rear; with the rear weighted down with a full tank of fuel it makes the handling interesting. You will, however, have to spend some time developing the suspension, chassis, and brakes on the 951 to match the M3. You wont have to worry about the rear suspension going through the floor in the Porsche though

Many of us here have been running 300whp+ reliably, as long as the car you buy was well maintained with plenty of service records. Turbocharging the S52 is a better idea, check into the FI sention of bimmerforums.com, lots of 500+WHP E36s running around on that forum.

Street car , Yes i would prefer the 951 for the street .....

E36 for the track and you can get an e46 engine for a lot less than 12 K
