early / late dipstick differences?

So my new dipstick would not fit the 86 tube. The reason is the later tubes opening is larger at the top.

I assumed it was the lead ball about 2/3 the way down on the later dipsticks that was keeping it from going all the way in, but it is actually the yellow plastic handle section that is larger. Kind of hard to see in my blurry photo, but the new dipstick is about 1 mm thicker. Guess a new tube is on order now.

Well I haven't had a chance to put in on the dyno but if the new one keeps oil from spraying out from the tube I will call it a success.
