944 S2 spindles and hubs on 86?
Since I am setting up my car for track use only, I wanted to update my 86' front hubs and spindles to 87' +. There are 944 S2 hubs and spindles for sale by a member for $200. Is that a good deal? Will the fit with no problems? Any thing else I should know?

I was told that when running slicks on 86' 951s the front spindles cant handle the extra stress. I guess the 87+ spindles are stronger. I was also told that they should match up to the control arms, just need 87 hubs and rotors.

I run 87 spindles and hubs on my 86 turbo (track duty) to handle the increased stress. You will need to get camber plates to get the camber back in the front end if you are running 86 early offset control arms. 86 spindles are known to fail at the track. 87+ are a bit beefier, and do not have the same failure rate.

I like Doc run 87 hubs/spindles with early offset arms/tierods. Camber plates are a must...I am going to switch over to late offset (manual) tierods and late control arms as well...just havent got around to it yet, maybe next year.

i always wondered if that would work thanks Porsche doc .ultimately you would still have less max ned camb to you remeber what the max neg camber you could get was ??

I can't remember, I'll have to pull out the alignment specs on it. It is set up pretty aggressively for the track alignment wise.

I've been running a track car with early spindles for years without any problem. I pack the wheel bearings and adjust the hub nut prior to each race season. This is much more critical in catastrophic failures than the newer spindles. Actually I like the early spindle setup better because it allows the use of steel control arms with easily replacable ball joints.

Some facts…from experience!
Late offset spindles a stronger
Late offset spindles can be bolted to an early setup and keep the offset (reusing the early hub). You will need either camber plates or a little mod to the camber washer cam (30 sec with a grinder)
The calipers all mount the same (except the turbo S)
The only difference between late and early turbo and S2 calipers is the piston size – not enough to worry about)
The other really BIG advantage of the late offset spindles is the hubs that go with them – much easier and quicker rotor replacement. For the 86 hubs you have to pull the hub off the spindle and expose the bearings, for the later hubs you don’t mess with the hubs and bearings – this is great for track side swaps!
Any serious track car I have prepped has been swapped to the later offset – and all my street cars have been converted too. Added bonus – 911 wheels now fit, lots of really nice take offs and good deals from guys ‘retiring’ from track driving.

How much of a concern is this weakness? What size tyre are you track guys running on your turbos? I was going to run a 225/45/R17 street tire on my 86 turbo setup with a wheel spacer, maybe do some DE days,
am I at high risk of breaking the 86 spindle?
Oh, did I mention Ill be drilling a hole through the middle of it as well to use an early speedo cable?...
