I have used the metal tape on my Lindsey slip joints. I remove the collar and put 3 or 4 wraps around it and re-install the collar. Works for the most part and easier than paste which I whole hearted subscribe to but it is a royal PITA.

I've just heard of people doing the leaf blower thing. Didn't really think through all the bad possibilities of it. I normally locate exhaust leaks in the winter time on a really cold day when I can look under the car and spy streams of exhaust gas shooting out from places along the exhaust piping.

If you are just looking for leaks, the gas escaping is not really that hot initially. With a cold exhaust, I will start the car and run my hand around the various joints feeling for a leak. However, I would not use this technique around the headers.
