Default Just picked up an 87 951 at an estate sale

came with a 85 na parts car. Needs a clutch been sitting for a year or so.
Question;

Besides changing all the fluids, timing belt, and water pump, what else should I do to make this car road worthy. TIA

Depends how deep you get into this thing. I would recommend changing all the seals.
rear main when you do the clutch
fronts when you do WP, belts etc...

Did you run a compression test?

I'll echo above. I think you'll need to get her running first, in order to get a decent handle on where to go to make her run well, and drive safely. Obviously after you get it running, you're going to need to look into brakes and steering. Our steering racks do enjoy developing leaks. The oil cooler seals probably leak. The drivetrain lub needs changing. Just do the basic stuff, and lets go from there.
Oh and Vaccuum lines. Guarantee they need attention.

one more thing. Be REALLY CAREFUL with the wiring and connectors. Even on good running 951's, there are lots of problems with baked out, and brittle wires and connectors.

I would also inspect / replace all coolant and vacuum hoses.
Did you get any maintenace records with the car?

If you decide to replace the slave cylinder during the clutch job, go ahead and order a new clutch master cylinder as well. The master always seems to fail with a new slave.

Nice color. I always try to address the things that I consider the most dangerous first. As ehall said, brakes and steering, and I would add fuel to that. Watch out for fuel leaks and replace anything that seems suspect.

Good stuff thanks, no records but I hope the low price 1,800 for the 2 cars gives me some cushion. The car does run.

1800.00 for the two! Nice!

What everyone else pretty much said...

Bleed the brakes (a motive bleeder will make it easy to do), and clutch.
Check fuel lines for leak.
Replace all front seal as you replace the belt.
I would replace the oil cooler seals... last thing you want is water mixing with the oil...
Change the oil and filter.
Replace the air filter.
Check condition of the coolant expansion tank and hoses.

Then drive and check for the rest of the common stuff... (DME solder joints, flywheel sensors, radiator fans coming on, turbo timer pump coming on, CVJs, etc.)

ooops...DAMN! I can't believe I forgot the three fuel lines leading to the fuel rail. Check those VERY carefully. A leak there is a disaster!

A little OT but.. How do you find estate sales? Craigslist?

I always dream about finding a mint 951 for $3000 at an estate sale lol

Yes check the fuel lines! I'd call Porsche and ask if it's had the recall work performed (just give them the VIN and they can tell you). The "jumper line" from the damper to the rail was recalled and if it's the old style (or just severely old and cracked) and goes out, it will spew fuel all over the headers.

Also check all the coolant hoses as stated above. There are quite a few small hoses in/around the turbo area and they get REALLY soft (I took one off and it almost fell apart in my hands when I changed mine). A full hose kit (Including all hoses for the heater core) from Zims (www.allzim.com) was about $140.

Zims also has the best price on rebuilt water pumps for 951s that I've found. $85 with a $100 core charge. I have one on my car and also installed one on a friends car and have had ZERO problems.

Good deal, I got mine at a garage sale last month 86 Turbo $1200

I just finished changing out
All coolent lines
All Vaccuum lines (Installed the lindsey venturi delete same time)
All new intercooler soft pipes
All new front seals, none were leaking but they were very dry.
All new belts, the tension on the timing belt was .9 !!!!! Yikes!
New throttle body O-ring
New injector seals
New Air Oil Seperator seals, Turbos don't have the coolent oil cooler
Rear Cam tower seal
New J-boot
New Aux coolent pump.
New Water pump
replaced 1 soft lifter

Runs perfect now.

Lots of other things to deal with from a car that sat for 2 years, but the engine is done.

Let's see some more pictures- under the hood, etc. So we can see what you are in for.

Put her up on the lift and get some pictures from below.

And your wife is going to kill you. You only have room for like 6 cars in your garage. Now you will be taking up the whole driveway, as well ?!?!
