Default Steering shaft play ?

I've been making some changes & along the way I removed the dash. Now i'm reassembling. I've gone to an aftermarket steering wheel. The problem is that the steering shaft seems to have some movement in & out. You can actually see the output spline that the link to rack attaches to move in & out. I can't seem to find a grove for a clip or anything. does anyone know if there is a clip or ring that I am missing somewhere. I don't recall the movement before. Thanks..

The intermediate shaft that goes from the steering shaft to the rack has a pinch type bolt on each end. Is it the intermediate shaft with u-joints or the actual steering column that has play in it. The intermediate shaft is a PITA to replace...FYI

Its The actual steering column. from hub spline to firewall. spline. with the steering wheel in you hands it will slide about 3/8 of an inch in & out.

not sure what is missing. I don't think the steering wheel should be moving in or out 3/8''. are the bolts loose that hold the steering column to the metal part of the dash?

Mine moves in/out just enough to feel and hear, but by no means is it even close to 3/8". Something is wrong.

Ahh.. Found it. The intermediate shaft U joint is not secure to the shaft at the firewall.
