Oh lord is that van awesome. Congrats on startup, it's a good feeling. That smoke is pretty classic especially with the cough at the end, lol.

Awesome looking engine compartment.

Great video my wife watched it and all she did was roll her eyes and go to bed.

I enjoyed it. Hard work paying off.

A quick update.... It started and ran, and I went for an obnoxiously loud 6PM drive through my neighborhood leaving path of fat oil drips, clouds of smoke, pissed off recreational walkers and dogs in my wake

Sadly no videos this time since I was too busy driving it, but by the time I was done the drive around my block it was idling nicely at 950RPM, the coolant was at 104C because either my fans arent turning on, or theres a big airbubble or both (got to 104C quite fast too), and pulling 20" Hg vacuum while idling. And pissing oil onto my driveway like a Porsche should.

According to Chris White, its pretty much broken in now At least the rings are. He says the MIDs break in basically the first time you load the engine as long as you arent running rich.

I did the first start and this drive with non detergent 30 weight oil, next im putting in Shell Rotella or Castrol GTX for a while, then after that its Red Line.

Brian did you install a cam for this setup?
What is the significance of using straight 30 weight then rotella and finally to red line?

Nope, stock cam. Ill eventually do the Vitesse cam probably. Starting with a new cam means you have to start and hold it at 2kRPM for a while, or the cam gets ruined (FYI there).

Thick oil to start (start and first drive), then dino oil (a change at 50 miles, then 200 miles I think most people do), then whatever you want to run. I think thats the rough order.

Went for a drive this afternoon So far its working great, except that my ignition switch has died and the cooling fans arent turning on. I have a feeling the ignition switch is why my windows and sunroof dont work, but ill see about that. Havent looked at the wiring diagrams yet to see. Had to do a roll start down a hill after I stalled (thankfully I stalled facing downhill!!), then push it into my garage. Oh well, im picking up a new one thursday morning.

Heres two videos of me driving around. Theres a few spots where you can hear the turbo nicely. I was getting a lot of odd looks and a few light flashes driving around without the hood on. The KEP Stg 2 is a very nice setup, very daily drivable IMHO and im really liking the Escort Cups with 400 front/500 rear springs, along with the Elephant Racing bushings. At least so far

Oh and before anyone asks, the random clear tubing sticking out of my engine bay is for the coolant bleeder. I have a valve in place of the screw, and I just screw a fitting with the hose in and stick the other end of the hose in the coolant tank. The waterless coolant means no overheating with the cap off

And heres a shot of the MegaSquirt log. Legend is on the right, min/msx values on the left, and current values in the middle. My AFR is a little cracked out, I think my sensor might be dying but im not sure. Coolant hit 113C, which is annoying me. The 65,000RPM max it shows is as I was turning the key back and forth trying to get it to start after stalling, the MegaSquirt registered 33 resets from me doing that so I guess it got something weird in there. Or I really missed a shift.
