I'm with jyoon
In my humble opinion, If you want low cost horsepower, then American V8 cars are the way to go. If you want value for money performance packages then typically the Japanese do best ie Evo's WRX's, 350z's etc.
German engineering is generally second to non (no I am not German, I just admire what they do). You can run a Porsche hard, all day long, great brakes great designs. Drive them to the track, drive them home with the AC and radio on.
951 TurboS was 250hp (100hp/litre), and 25mpg. If maintained correctly its capable of 300,000miles or more. Turbo's get a bad rap, but its generally the modded ones not stock. 100hp/litre was very high in the 80's and is even high by todays standards. By comparison a big V8 at 350 Hp is only around 60hp/litre so hardly stressed.
I love high horsepower, been there done that and would absolutely do it again. and as everyone says its highly adictive, but potentially costly.
My personal choice for best of the 944 family of cars would be a 968TurboS clone http://vista.pca.org/stl/968rs.htm .
3+litre, 8valve, 944TurboS Tranny. At 350hp its less than 120hp/litre so not too extreme. Great looking car, formidable package, the best the factory had to offer.

951's are just like boats. You have your best day when you buy it and when you sell it.
In reality, it takes a bit to sort them out but once you do, they treat you well. These cars are 20+ years old. they are going to need work.

I have had the good fortune of driving a ‘boat load’ of modified 951. Here is my opinion (this may get some folks cranky!)
330 – 350 rwhp is a real sweet spot for a street driven 951.
Its fast but not stupid fast, break parts every day kind of power. At 350 rwhp you will fight traction problems on the street. Anything about 300 rwhp and you really need to do significant suspension work just to drive it safely – brakes, coilovers and such. In my book the ‘really need’ should be changed to ‘required’!
My old daily driver ran at 350rwhp for years, passing was big fun – if you were stick behind somebody at 60 and you did a full power pass you would just see 100 by the time you got back in lane.
Track driving is a completely different thing. As long as its reliable – the more the better!

The least expensive method to curb the modification cycle (or at least slow it down), is to buy another car (a slow one) to drive daily. Then when you take the 951 out on evenings and the weekend, it will always seem like it's got a ton of power. You can even keep it stock!
