As for it breaking... if it's broken, it didn't break by sitting there... it broke when you stepped on the clutch.

The broken fork I've seen did exactly that. On one random stepping on the clutch pedal, the car wouldn't go into gear (because the clutch really wasn't disengaged!) We didn't know what happened. Towed it to the shop, got it all taken apart, and found the broken fork. Yours isn't an '86, is it?

I just had an idea. Maybe the TO bearing has turned and that's why you can't get the fork positioned right. The TO bearing probably needs to be rotated back to the right orientation before the fork can do anything.

A pic from a 968 with the access panel removed can act as a cutaway pic for your 944 mechanism...

944 throwout bearing is round all the way around - no ears like that.

Can you get the pin in at all? Sounds like you're focusing more on the feeling of the fork than trying to insert the pin. If you can get the pin in, then you can determine if the fork actually is broken because it wont be able to disengage the clutch.

I have gotten the pin in repeatedly and the fork just flops around. I guess I'm about 90% sure the fork is broken, I just don't want to believe it.

All this time I thought you were connecting a new fork and shaft not your old one. Doesn't sound like good news though, one of the fingers on the fork is probably snapped off.

My brother-in-law is bringing a borescope over this weekend. I'll take a look, but I expect it's all gotta come apart. Damn. I was sooooo close to having this thing on the road.

How much does it flop? It should be able to move back and forth a fair amount when the pin is in. It isn't like it will be solid once the pin is in.

I runs the whole opening. It only stops when it hits metal.

Just an update for future searches: this ended up being a failed throw out bearing. The clip came off and the TO bearing separated from the pp.

How does the fork look? I'm getting Markus B to fix me up something stronger. Might be a good time to do something similar. I know 'Eniac' was talking about someone making a custom product to surpass stock as well. Just a thought Michelle...
