multi-purpose grease as assembly lube

I went into the local amsoil dealer today to buy assembly lube. I thought I could get some really good stuff there. Well it turns out (according to the guy there) that amsoil does not make assembly lube. He instead gave me a tube of synthetic grease and said "hmm-hmm 3-time winner of the Indy 500 uses this as assembly lube, and I used it when I ran my shop for 19 years".
I'm not convinced. If multi-purpose grease does work then they wouldn't sell a special grease for engine assembly. What do you guys think? I think I should go return this tube and find a redline distributor...

I would think grease would be harder to flush out of the system, oil filters, small holes etc. You can order lube from Jegs.

I was always taught that multi purpose grease is a no-no, as it will not flush out of bearing journals properly when the oil finally gets there. Don't know if its actually true, but I've never been inclined to test the theory when assembly lube is readily available.

Redline in the way to go.
1 4oz jar should last you half a dozen engines...you don't need to goop it on, only the lube left between the bearings matters.

Winchester Auto in Campbell and (I believe) Gotelli's Speed Shop in San Bruno both sell redline assembly lube (among others). I used plenty on my motor and still used less than a quarter of the can/jar.

Thanks guys - that's what I figured... if it doesn't say 'engines' on the tube, then it shouldn't be used for engines. Amsoil better take returns...
Thanks Tom, I know Gotelli's and they're really close to me, I'll go see if they have it.
