Question DIY 3-axis accelerometer with a Wii

Hi all, I came across this post on a local Morgan Car forum where by a member is modifying a Wii hand controller to measure speed,
cornering G, and so on for his track car.

I thought it sounded very interesting so here is what he posted:

"I am spending some holiday time working on developing a performance monitor using a laptop PC to hook up to a Wii Remote handset. The idea is that the Wii remote has a 3-axis accelerometer in it, so you can put it in the car, go for a drive, and get all sorts of interesting info like acceleration, speed, cornering G, and so on.

I haven't got a complete Wii, just a remote handset. You can get them off eBay for about 25 quid. The reason I got one is that it's about the cheapest way to get hold of a 3-axis accelerometer that's accessible through a Bluetooth connection.

There's a nifty piece of software called GlovePIE which runs on PCs and is able to connect to the Wii Remote and read the accelerometer values about 12 times a second. It can log these to a comma-separated variables file, which can be read into a spreadsheet.

So the idea is, you set up the Wii remote, start the logging program, and go for a drive. When you get home, you have a second-by-second log of all the acceleration values. Then by using the good old Newtonian mechanics equations, you can figure out the speed you were going at any moment, and if you knjow the weight of the car and the drag coefficient, you can figure out how much power you were using to do it."

Does anybody have any opinions on this ... Might just have to give this ago myself as the cost of doing this would be very cheap and would make a nice weekend project to play with

Also what is "GlovePIE"???

Best regards,
Mark

you can do the same thing with an iPhone and a program called dynolicious.

But I agree that the wii remote is a super cheap way

Add a GPS logger and a BluTrax (http://intelligentz.net/blutrax/) to it and you have a very complete product. Then make it user friendly and become a millionaire.

Does that Wii remote read more than 1g?
Also, this is nothing more than a G-tec. It's more user firendly and amazingly simple.
buzzkill. I know.

95ONE - The Wii Remote measures +/- 3G or equivalent to a 6G range and is accurate to .01 decimal points

Here is the code:

//Glovepie v0.29 script

var.t=time*86400

//Writes motion data to file
OutputToFile(RemoveUnits(var.t)+","+Wiimote.gx + ", " + Wiimote.gy + ", " + Wiimote.gz)

debug = var.t+', '+wiimote.gx+', '+wiimote.gy+', '+wiimote.gz

Seen any direct comparisons with G-Tech yet?

Wow this is pretty sweet, a wii remote is small and cheap enough to be mounted in the car and left there. Way better than the iPhone program I think.
