The OE 944 condenser is the one some feel is too small for R-134 in hot climates. I converted my 91 BMW my son drives to R-134 years ago and it works great on the open road but absolutely sucks in stop and go city traffic. I compared the condenser size to his girlfriends 96 325 designed for R-134 and her condenser is substantially larger and thicker.

You might consider getting new barrier type hoses, the R-134 runs at a higher pressure and will find any weak spots in an old style non-barrier R-12 hose. The Sanden or Kuehl compressor from Griffiths is a very good start if you want to do it right. Some say the condenser is still a bit small for optimum R-134 efficiency when driving in city traffic where air flow is reduced.

I can't remember what the R134A hoses are lined with but I know it is different then the R12 hose. R134A tends to leak easier then R12 did. Also, since R134A generates more heat in the compressor, sometimes a larger condensor is the only way to get the heat out of the cycle.

Physically, yes, I could have.
However, due to a lack of time, facilities (especially facilities) and the ability to lift the car safely, I couldn't have relaistically gotten it done without atleast one extra day in L.A., and the purchase of a couple of jack stands, which I don't need.
It's all good now. The drive was still worth it.
